iBobber vs Deeper: which sonar is right for you?

    Depth and casting range

    Here, the facts speak for themselves. Deeper sonars scan deeper and cast further than the iBobber.

    The Deeper PRO and PRO+ cast 330 ft: over 3 times further than iBobber.

    • Deeper 3.0 casts 160 ft: 60 ft further than iBobber.
    • Deeper PRO and PRO+ scan down to 260 ft: 125 ft deeper than iBobber.
    • Deeper 3.0 scans down to 160ft: 25 ft deeper than iBobber.

    Verdict: For small ponds, the iBobber is ok. Anything larger and a Deeper Smart Sonar is your only option.

  • Rock solid connectivity

    Rock solid connectivity

    Here, the iBobber’s Bluetooth Smart connection lets it down. Both the Deeper PRO and PRO+ use a WiFi connection, which means much stronger connectivity. This means much better performance when casting and trolling.

    Verdict: The Deeper PRO and PRO+ offer the best connectivity.

    Here Deeper sonars have a big advantage. You can adjust the sensitivity on the app.

    • Clear water – use full sensitivity to pick up every detail.
    • Murky water – reduce the sensitivity to cut out clutter and only see fish and structure.

    iBobber has no sensitivity adjustment, so in murky conditions it will be very hard to identify what you are seeing.

    Verdict: iBobber isn’t suitable for murky water because it has no sensitivity adjustment. Deeper sonars are suitable for all water conditions.

  • scanning time

    Continuous scanning time

    Because it only uses one low frequency sonar, the iBobber offers up to 10 hours of scanning. The Deeper PRO and PRO+ use dual frequency sonars and scan 15 times per second, which means much better accuracy. The 3.0 also has dual frequency sonars. As a result, all 3 models offer 6 hours of continuous use.

    Verdict: iBobber offers longer continuous scanning because it uses low frequency sonars.

    Trying to attract fish with a pulse

    The iBobber Pulse uses an electronic pulse to try to attract fish. No Deeper sonars have this function. We make sonars to give you the data you need, but it’s your job to catch the fish.

    Verdict: If you want to attract fish with electric signals, you can use the iBobber pulse.

    Marking fish and target separation

    You can use both the iBobber or any Deeper sonar to mark fish. Deeper sonars, especially the PRO and PRO+, offer better accuracy scanning and the ability to scan wide or narrow areas.

    • The iBobber offers only 1 sonar frequency: 118kHz at 42° . With a wide beam like this you can find the general area where fish are, but not their exact location. Plus, the deeper you are scanning, the wider the cone, so it will mark fish in a wider and wider area, making their exact location harder to pinpoint.
    • All Deeper sonars have both wide beam (90 kHz – 55°) and narrow beam scanning (290 kHz – 15°). This means you can first scan a wide area, then use narrow beam to home in on your target.
    • The Deeper PRO and PRO+ offer target separation of 0.5″ (by the way this is better than many ice flashers and boat units). This means you can tell when you’re looking at a school of baitfish and not at 1 big predator. Sonars with poor target separation can’t distinguish between 1 big object and a group of small objects. iBobber do not specify its target separation.

    Verdict: You can use any of these sonars for marking fish. Deeper sonars allow you to scan both broad and narrow areas: with iBobber, you can only scan broad areas. The Deeper PRO and PRO+ offer the highest accuracy scanning.

  • ice fishing display

    Ice Fishing

    All Deeper sonars have been specifically designed to use for ice fishing:

    • The app has a special ice fishing mode, with flasher display and zoom for tracking your lure.
    • The 290 kHz – 15° narrow beam scanning frequency is strong enough to pick up even small lures and jigs, and narrow enough for use in ice holes.
    • The Deeper app has GPS Ice Hole Marking so you can save data on every ice hole you fish.

    Technically, you can use the iBobber for ice fishing because it is able to operate in below freezing temperatures. But in practice you will find it very difficult. Here’s why:

    • iBobber uses a 118kHz – 42° wide beam scanning frequency. This means, unless the ice is very thin, the sonar cone will hit the sides of the ice hole and be reflected so you won’t get accurate data.
    • iBobber scans at a low frequency, so if you’re using a small lure or jig, it will struggle to pick it up.
    • iBobber has no ice fishing setting, meaning you can’t zoom in on your lure or track it effectively.

    Verdict: Deeper sonars, especially the fast scanning PRO and PRO+, are ideal for ice fishing. iBobber has not been designed for ice fishing and will struggle.

  • topographic maps

    Creating underwater topographic maps

    An underwater topographic map (or bathymetric map) is a detailed contour map of the structure and depth underwater. With Deeper sonars you can create underwater topographic maps of any lake or river you fish. The maps are saved to your smartphone, and you can view them on your home computer too. They’re an amazing way to find features, rule out unproductive areas and discover new spots to try.

    • Boat: you can use any Deeper sonar to make underwater topographic maps using Boat Mode on the Deeper app.
    • From the shore: the PRO+ has inbuilt GPS, so you can use it to make underwater topographic maps from the shore by casting it out.
    • You can view all your maps on any computer using Lakebook – the Deeper Data Manager. Just go to maps.deepersonar.com and login to view and analyse all your maps.

    iBobber has no mapping function. The “contour mapping” function it has is simply scanning for structure.

    Verdict: underwater topographic maps give you a real advantage in finding the best spots. Only Deeper sonars offer this function.

     

  • trolling from boat

    Trolling from my boat

    The iBobber is not suitable for continuous trolling. Its Bluetooth connection and low scanning frequency means trolling, even a low speeds, will be very difficult. iBobber claim “this is an issue with all wireless fishfinders.” But it’s not. There are two factors that affect trolling. 1. Is the sonar scanning fast enough? 2. Is the wireless connection strong enough?

    • The Deeper PRO and PRO+ send 15 scans per second, which means you can easily troll it using the Deeper Flex Arm Mount on your boat or kayak (we recommend a speed of 2 mph).
    • The Deeper PRO and PRO+ use a WiFi connection which gives rock solid connectivity.

    All Deeper sonars can also create underwater topography maps when trolled from your boat. iBobber cannot.

    Verdict: The Deeper PRO and PRO+ are suitable for trolling thanks to their high scanning speeds and strong wireless connection.

  • bottom structure scanning

    Scanning for structure

    You can use an iBobber to scan for structure (iBobber call this “contour mapping”, but it’s really just a scan). But Deeper sonars are much easier to use for this. There are 3 reasons why:

    • Deeper sonars have history mode. Your scans for each location are saved, so you don’t need to rescan the same area every time, saving you time.
    • With Deeper sonars you can scan for structure and mark fish at the same time. iBobber can only do one at a time, so it takes more time.
    • Deeper sonars scan at a higher frequency, giving better accuracy. Plus the display allows you to understand bottom hardness and the exact shape of vegetation. The iBobber display does not.

    Verdict: You will save time and get a more accurate picture of the structure underwater with Deeper sonars.
